Oculus is one of the most renowned brands in the VR industry. VR gaming headsets were pioneered by Oculus, thereafter being followed by other brands. So, it had to be Oculus that brought to you the most budget-friendly VR gaming headset, the Oculus Go!

The Oculus go is one of the only VR gaming headsets on the market that can provide you with a wholesome VR experience at a price that won’t itch your pocket too much. So, without further ado, let’s learn more about the VR headset in our detailed Oculus Go review below!

About Oculus Go

About Oculus Go

The Oculus Go is a standalone VR headset. It is not connected to any device such as a smartphone, gaming console or PC, and runs on its own, without any wired connections.

Being standalone adds to the “budget-friendly” tag as this negates the requirement for high-end PCs or smartphones to step into the virtual world. Being a standalone headset, the Oculus Go runs on  battery. It has a 3-hour charge time for a full charge. You can enjoy up to 2 hours of gaming or up to 2.5 hours of video watching, that we honestly feel can be improved.

Who Can Use Oculus Go?

OculusGo is a product that in true sense is suitable for all, seeing how little it costs for a VR headset. However, this VR headset is truly suitable for users who are new to the whole VR experience.

Unboxing the Oculus Go

Oculus Go comes in a beautiful white box that can make a great present for your friends or family. Upon unboxing, you can find the Oculus Go VR headset, a frame friendly spacer, an AA battery, a 10 W power adapter and a single-touch controller to help you navigate through your VR experience.

Design

The Oculus Go product design is spectacular. It gives you the feel of a high-end gadget. On the whole, for a VR headset that has all the elements needed to run a virtual world inside a box on top of your head, its design is sleek.

Oculus Go comes with an adjustable strap for holding up against your face. Even though the fit of the headset is somewhat solid, it still showed some signs of moving up and down, meaning that the strapping could be improved upon.

Moving on from the head-strap, the Oculus Go feels amazing on your face. By that, we mean that the headset is comfortable on the face. The inner lining of the headset is cushioned and comfortable, but at the same time isn’t really pushing into your face.

As for light leakage, the Oculus Go lets light into your headset from the nose bridge. This might be a turn-off for a majority of people when picking out a VR headset. But, what we personally feel is, that the price at which you are getting this headset, the light leakage can be ignored to a certain extent. In other words, it’s a matter of choice from person to person.

Lastly, a major concern is the weight distribution. This is a problem not many VR headsets have been able to surpass. And, Oculus Go is no different in that regard. Even though comfortable, after a certain period you may start feeling the weight of the headset on your face. Not so much it becomes unusable, but enough for you to know it is there.

Performance

In simple terms, Oculus Go is an entry point to the VR world. But, even for an entry point, the headset offers a lot to users. The Oculus Go comes with a 5.5-inch LCD panel for display with a screen resolution of 2560 x 1440 that is impressive.

The images are sharp due to the use of an LCD. Also, the LCD ensures the size of the pixels are bigger, allowing you to completely look past the “Screen Door Effect.”

One factor that people may consider to be a drawback is that the Oculus Go has been designed to be an “Orientation Only” VR headset. This means that you can observe the virtual space 360 degrees but not move inside the virtual world.

For example, you will see a text in the game but that text will be really far. You won’t be able to walk up to the text to read it. You will stay where you are and commence your game play. Nevertheless, for a VR headset costing as low as the Oculus Go, we think that’s only a fair deal.

Lastly, let’s hit upon the sound aspect of the VR headset. Oculus Go comes with built-in speakers on the strap mounts near both ears. Even though they do not serve as a replacement for high-end headphones, they still have their own advantages.

The speakers provide a more ambient feel to the sound you experience as it is not being pushed directly into your ear canal. Also, there is some obvious sound leakage from outside that keeps you aware of the real world around you.

The Verdict

All in all, we didn’t find much we could falter about the Oculus Go VR gaming headset as the price at which it allows you to experience VR is amazing. It does act as an inspiration to brands looking to come out with their standalone VR headsets. Therefore, if you want to get your first VR experience, we truly believe that the Oculus Go is the gadget you’re looking for, literally.
