How to Clean VR Lenses – You’ve Got to Be Very Careful

In the previous part of the “Clean Your VR” series, we discussed how to clean a VR headset. In this post, we’ll discuss how to clean VR lenses – the most delicate part of your VR headset.

The most important part of a VR experience is the VR headset. And, the most significant part of the VR headset is the VR lenses. One thing that you or most VR gamers do is clean the lenses. But, why is cleaning VR lenses a necessity and what is the right way to clean them? Well, that’s exactly what we are going to discuss in the upcoming section. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Here’s Why You Need to Clean the VR Lenses

The lenses in your VR headset are no different from the lenses of your camera or eyeglasses. They are prone to macroscopic material, such as oil secretions, dust, dirt and so on, and microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, fungus, viruses and so on. After all, you are constantly touching them with your hands.

Since the VR lenses are very close to your face, especially your eyes, it’s vital to keep them clean and sanitized to avoid allergies and infections. Even when you are not using the VR headset, the lenses are collecting dust, dirt, microorganisms and what not. Even though you can protect your VR headset, especially the lenses, using a VR cover, it’s not a good idea to keep the headset covered all the time. What about the sweat buildup on the headset and lenses? The headset and lenses need some air to get rid of it.

Therefore, to protect yourself from potential allergies and infections, and improve the longevity of the headset, it’s important to clean both the headset and lenses.

Clean the VR Lenses Every Time You Are Using the Headset

As mentioned in the previous section, your VR headset is constantly exposed to harmful macroscopic materials and microorganisms, therefore, you should clean the lenses every time you use the headset (both before and after using it).

By cleaning the lenses before using the headset, you’ll ensure that you’re not getting exposed to any harmful material on them. Even if you don’t use your VR headset regularly, it would be a good idea to clean the lenses at least once every week. Who wants to see their VR headset wrapped in dirt or dust? Well, you’ve spent a hefty sum while purchasing it!

Cleaning Apparatus Required

Here’s a quick list of things you’ll need to clean your lenses:

Compressed Air Container

Compressed Air Container

A compressed air container is an optional requirement. It’s not strictly needed and you can skip it if you are facing trouble finding one. A container of compressed air can help you remove the accumulated dirt and dust on your VR lenses quickly. You can also use compressed air to clean the inner portion of your VR headset.

Microfiber Cloth

Microfiber Cloth

A microfiber cloth should be your only option for cleaning your VR lenses. They are easily available on the market and affordable too. The best thing about a microfiber cloth is that it is soft and lint-free. So, you can rest assured that the cloth will wipe off your lenses clean. Also, you don’t need to dispose of the cloth after using it; you can simply wash it and reuse it.

How to Clean VR Lenses – A Simple 2-Step Process

So, by now you know why you need to clean the lenses of your VR headset, how often you should do it and what all you need to get started. Let’s now look at 2 crucial tips to do a great job with cleaning VR lenses.

1. Make the Most of Compressed Air to Remove the Dirt and Dust

While spraying the compressed air on the VR lenses, don’t use too much pressure. Spray in batches to ensure you don’t damage the lenses with a high-pressure compressed air blast. Keep the nozzle of the compressed air container at least 3 to 4 inches away from the lenses while spraying.

2. Clean the Lenses With a Microfiber Cloth

After you spray compressed air and manage to remove the first layer of dirt and dust on the VR lenses, wipe them with a dry microfiber cloth. Don’t put too much pressure on the lenses while cleaning them. Wipe off the VR lenses gently in a circular motion.

Come What May; Don’t Use Liquid or Chemical cleaners

Yes, that’s right. Irrespective of how much dirt, dust, or grime is accumulated on the VR lenses, don’t use liquid cleaners, disinfectant wipes, or alcohol. The cleansing solutions are harsh and can easily damage the VR lenses.

Final Words

As you’ve seen in this post, it’s extremely important to sanitize your VR headset and lenses regularly. However, by following the steps mentioned in both parts of our Clean Your VR series, you can complete the job with finesse, in no time. However, ensure you invest quality time in cleaning the VR lenses as they are delicate and can get damaged easily.
